Is urgent mold remediation needed for my child's room?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has had a constant damp smell since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. I just pulled back the corner of the wardrobe in my youngest son's bedroom and found a patch of black, speckled mold on the wall behind it, about the size of my hand. He's been sneezing a lot more than usual. How urgent is it that I get a professional remediation team in, or can I handle this myself with a bleach solution first?

Given the size (hand-sized), location (bedroom), and the occupant (a child with increased sneezing), professional assessment is the recommended course of action. A patch that size suggests a moisture source behind the wall, like a slow pipe leak or condensation from the AC unit, which a surface clean will not fix.

Bleach is not recommended. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and plaster, as it only bleaches the surface colour without killing the root structure. It can also aggravate respiratory issues by releasing harmful fumes into the air. For a small, surface-level patch on a non-porous material, a solution of white vinegar can be more effective, but your situation appears more complex.

The constant damp smell and the mold's location behind furniture point to elevated humidity and lack of air circulation, a common issue in Dubai villas where AC may not reach enclosed spaces. This environment allows mold to thrive.

For your child's health and to identify the hidden moisture source, a professional inspection is prudent. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the root cause. Remediation would involve correcting the moisture issue, safely removing contaminated materials like the affected section of drywall under containment to prevent spore spread, and verifying clearance with air testing. This is the only way to ensure the problem is resolved and not just hidden.
