Safest way to remove bathroom mold with toddlers?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I've just found patches of black mold behind the toilet and creeping up the wall in our main bathroom. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and with the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse. What’s the safest and fastest way to get rid of this, considering I have toddlers crawling around everywhere?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's humidity is extremely common due to constant condensation from hot showers and AC use. For your toddlers' safety, the fastest and safest removal method depends on the extent.

For small patches (under one square foot), a DIY approach can work. Mix one part distilled white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the room is well-ventilated. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can release harmful fumes in a confined space. After scrubbing, wipe the area clean with a damp cloth and dry it completely with a fan. This addresses surface growth but not the underlying moisture.

However, since you describe it "creeping up the wall," this suggests a more established moisture issue, likely within the wall cavity itself. In villas, this often stems from hidden pipe condensation or a small leak. For this scale and with children present, professional remediation is the safest choice. They will contain the area with plastic sheeting to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the house, use HEPA-filtered air scrubbers, and safely remove the contaminated materials. They can also identify and fix the root moisture source, which is critical to prevent rapid regrowth.

The coughing could be related to the mold spores becoming airborne. Before any major cleanup, consider a professional inspection to assess the wall's integrity and the true extent. They can provide documented evidence of the mold type and spore count, which is valuable information, especially with health symptoms present. For long-term control, run the bathroom exhaust fan for 30 minutes after every shower and consider a dehumidifier to keep humidity below 60%.
