How to permanently remove black mold from bathroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this damp, earthy smell for a while, but I just pulled back the corner of the vanity cabinet today and found a bunch of black fuzzy mold spreading on the wall behind it. We keep the exhaust fan running, but with the humidity lately, it doesn't seem to be enough. What's the most effective way to kill this for good and stop it from coming back?

Black mold behind a vanity is a common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to the high ambient humidity, which creates persistent condensation on cold water pipes and walls. The most effective removal starts with identifying and stopping the moisture source, which is often a small, hidden plumbing leak from the sink supply line or drain.

For a small, visible patch (under ~1 sq. ft.), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover solution or a mix of white vinegar and baking soda. Avoid bleach; it only removes the surface colour and can worsen indoor air quality without killing the roots. Dry the area completely with a fan immediately after.

Permanent removal requires addressing the humidity. Your exhaust fan may not be powerful enough for Dubai's climate. Run it for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and consider a portable dehumidifier for the room. For mold on porous surfaces like drywall or behind tiles, or if the smell persists, the mold has likely penetrated deeper than the surface.

In many Jumeirah apartments, the mold behind the vanity is just the visible part of a larger problem inside the wall cavity. For recurring mold or a musty smell that won't go away, a professional inspection with a borescope is needed to assess the wall interior. Remediation often involves removing the affected drywall, treating the cavity, and repairing the leak to ensure it doesn't return.
