How urgent is treating mold with a toddler?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. The wall feels a bit cold and damp to the touch, and we're worried because our toddler plays in that area all the time. I know Dubai's humidity can be a problem, but how urgent is it that we get this professionally treated?

The situation you describe requires prompt professional assessment. A consistently cold, damp wall with visible mold growth in a toddler's play area should be addressed quickly. The combination of high Dubai humidity and air conditioning can create persistent condensation points on cold surfaces, which is a perfect environment for mold.

For a household with a toddler, urgency is higher. Children are more susceptible to respiratory irritants and allergens that molds can release. While not all molds are toxic, many common household types can cause or worsen allergy symptoms, coughing, and congestion in developing respiratory systems. The priority is to identify the moisture source—it could be a minor condensation issue or something more significant like a hidden pipe leak within the wall.

Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can often spread spores and only temporarily remove surface discoloration without addressing the root moisture problem. A professional inspection can pinpoint the source using moisture meters and thermal imaging. They can also take a sample for lab analysis to identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for indoor air quality, and a proper remediation process will follow these to ensure the environment is returned to a safe standard for your family. I would recommend getting an assessment within the next week.
