How to stop AC moisture causing mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Mirdif villa for a couple of years, but lately, I keep finding patches of black mold in the corners of our master bedroom closet, especially on the leather bags and shoes I have stored in there. The AC vent is right above it, and it feels more damp in that spot than anywhere else. What's the best way to stop the moisture from the AC causing this and protect our stuff?

The issue is likely condensation from your AC's cold air meeting Dubai's warm, humid air, creating a damp microclimate in that closet. The vent above it is a clear indicator.

Start by redirecting the airflow. Adjust the vent louvers so the cold air isn't blowing directly onto the closet or its contents. If possible, keep the closet doors slightly ajar to improve air circulation and prevent stagnant, humid air from being trapped inside. For the leather items, move them to a drier, more ventilated area immediately to prevent further damage; mold on leather is difficult to remediate.

The root cause needs addressing. Your AC might be oversized for the room, cooling the air too quickly without adequately removing humidity, which is a common issue here. Have an HVAC technician check the unit's condensate drain line for blockages and ensure the drip pan is functioning correctly—a clog is a frequent source of excess moisture. They can also assess if the unit is properly balanced for dehumidification.

For a persistent problem, a professional inspection is warranted to identify the exact moisture source and extent. In many Mirdif villas, this scenario requires a two-step approach: an HVAC specialist to correct the moisture issue and a mold inspector to safely assess the closet for hidden growth. They can take air and surface samples to identify the spore types, which dictates the cleaning protocol. Solving the condensation is the only way to protect your belongings long-term.
