Should I treat this spreading mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of dark, speckled patches spreading from the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been getting noticeably bigger over the last couple of weeks, especially with all the humidity. Given how quickly it seems to be growing here in Dubai, is this something I need to get treated by a professional immediately, or can I handle it myself this weekend?

The rapid growth you're describing, especially on an exterior wall in Dubai's high humidity, strongly suggests a moisture issue that needs professional diagnosis. While small surface mold can sometimes be handled DIY, the fact it's actively spreading from within the wall cavity indicates a more serious problem that cleaning the visible surface won't fix.

For a patch larger than roughly one square meter, or any growth that reappears after cleaning, professional assessment is advised. The priority is identifying and stopping the moisture source, which could be a leaking pipe, condensation within the wall, or seepage from outside. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the root cause invisible to the eye. Simply wiping it away with bleach is ineffective and can aggravate spores.

If you choose to inspect yourself, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Look for plumbing lines near that wall, check for musty odors in the closet, and feel for dampness. However, given its location and growth rate, a professional can determine if the drywall or insulation needs replacement to prevent recurrence. In many Dubai villas, this type of growth is linked to thermal bridging and condensation on cooler exterior walls, which requires a building science approach to remediate properly.
