What's the best local product to remove bathroom ceiling mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this black speckled mold growing along the ceiling edge above the shower in our master bathroom. I think the steam has been getting trapped because the exhaust fan seems really weak. It's in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle and it's been getting worse over the last few weeks. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this and prevent it from coming back?

Bathroom ceiling mold in Dubai is primarily caused by trapped humidity from showers and our high ambient moisture levels. The weak exhaust fan you mentioned is likely the core issue, as it allows steam to condense on cooler ceiling surfaces.
For a localized spot treatment, most hardware stores in Dubai (ACE, Dragon Mart, etc.) carry concentrated anti-mold sprays. Look for a product containing chlorine bleach or hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient. Spray it directly on the affected area, let it sit for 10-15 minutes to penetrate, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse. Always wear gloves and ensure the room is well-ventilated during application. However, killing surface mold is a temporary fix if the moisture source remains. The weak exhaust fan must be addressed. Check if it's clogged with dust or if the motor is failing; building maintenance may need to repair or upgrade it to a higher capacity unit suitable for our humid climate. After showers, run the fan for at least 30 minutes to clear all moisture and wipe down wet surfaces. For persistent or large-scale mold (covering over one square meter), or if it returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to identify hidden dampness in the ceiling and perform air or tape-lift sampling to identify the species, which is important for assessing any potential health risks and ensuring the remediation is done correctly. |
