Is this closet mold in Dubai DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed these weird black spots starting to form in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I’m worried it's spreading. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai to check it out properly?

That pattern of black spots in a closet corner is a classic sign of a mold colony, and the recent humidity is almost certainly the cause. In Dubai's climate, with its high ambient moisture and reliance on air conditioning, this is a common issue. The AC creates temperature differentials that lead to condensation in less-ventilated spaces like closets, especially on exterior walls.
For a small, surface-level patch (less than about one square foot), a DIY approach can be effective. A solution of distilled white vinegar is often more successful than bleach, as it can kill the mold at the root and prevent faster regrowth. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem. Given that you've noticed it spreading, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY cleaning often just disturbs the spores, sending them into the air and potentially spreading the colony to other areas you can't see. The inspector's primary job is to identify and diagnose the source of the moisture—whether it's a small condensation issue, a hidden pipe leak, or inadequate room ventilation. They use tools like moisture meters and thermal cameras to see inside walls. For verifiable results, ensure the company you call provides a detailed report, often backed by lab analysis of swab samples. This identifies the species and provides a science-based remediation plan. Resolving the moisture source is the only way to prevent it from returning, even after a perfect cleaning. |
