Dealing with black mold on bedroom wall: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in our Jumeirah villa, it seems to be spreading. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold removal company, and if so, what's a rough cost I should expect for a single room?

Black mold on an exterior wall in a Jumeirah villa is a classic symptom of condensation due to the high humidity and temperature differential from year-round AC use. The wall behind the wardrobe is likely a "cold bridge," where warm, humid air meets a cooler surface and creates moisture, allowing mold to feed on the organic material in the paint or plaster.

For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be attempted. However, standard bleach is not recommended as it is mostly water and can worsen the problem by adding moisture; it also doesn't prevent regrowth. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store, scrubbing thoroughly. The critical step is addressing the source: move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation, ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature to reduce condensation, and use a dehumidifier in the room.

If the growth covers a larger area, has a musty odour, has penetrated the wall (you see discoloration or crumbling drywall), or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will identify the exact species and moisture source, often using thermal imaging to find hidden dampness. Remediation involves contained removal of affected materials, antimicrobial treatment, and fixing the underlying humidity issue to prevent recurrence.

Costs for professional remediation are not fixed and depend entirely on the extent of the infestation and required repairs. For a single room, you can expect the assessment to be a separate fixed fee, with the remediation quote provided after the inspection details the scope of work. Always request a detailed report with before-and-after lab air quality testing to verify the results; this is the only way to confirm the problem is truly resolved.
