How to permanently remove closet mold and prevent condensation?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the inside wall has started getting black fuzzy mold spots, especially on my leather bags and shoes. I think it’s because the AC vent is right above it and it gets super cold, creating condensation. I wiped it down with vinegar but it came back within a couple of weeks. What is the most effective way to clean this for good and prevent the condensation from happening in the first place?

Vinegar only removes surface mold and won't address the underlying moisture problem, which is why it returned. The issue is almost certainly condensation due to the extreme temperature differential between your cold AC vent and Dubai's humid air. This creates a perpetual damp environment where mold thrives.

For permanent removal, start by addressing the moisture source. The most effective immediate cleaning solution for a small area is a mix of detergent and water to physically remove the biomass, followed by a disinfectant like diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide to kill remaining spores. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning. For porous materials like leather, a professional restoration service is often needed to prevent permanent damage.

Prevention is key. Redirect the AC vent airflow away from the closet using a deflector or adjust the louves. Improve air circulation inside the closet by not overpacking it and occasionally leaving the doors open. A small disposable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet can help absorb excess moisture. For a more permanent solution, consider having an HVAC technician assess whether the unit's condensate drain line is functioning properly and if the refrigerant charge is correct, as an over-cooling unit will produce excess condensation.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter or returns after addressing these moisture sources, a professional inspection is recommended to identify any hidden issues and conduct proper remediation to ensure it is resolved permanently.
