Can I clean black window mold myself or hire professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's the black fuzzy stuff growing along the bottom of the window frames in our bedrooms. It's been super humid lately and I first noticed it about three weeks ago, but it's spread a lot. Is this something I can tackle myself with some cleaning spray from the supermarket, or is this a job for a professional company to handle properly?

It depends on the extent of growth and the underlying cause. For a small, isolated patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach may be sufficient. However, given its location on window frames and rapid spread in the humid climate, professional assessment is often warranted to identify the moisture source and ensure it's properly remediated.

In Dubai, this black growth is frequently Stachybotrys or Cladosporium, both of which thrive on the constant condensation that forms on cold window frames from year-round AC use. This persistent dampness, combined with high outdoor humidity, creates an ideal environment for it to return even after cleaning.

For a small area, use a mixture of detergent and water or a diluted vinegar solution. Never use bleach, as it only lightens the colour and does not address the root problem. Scrub gently to avoid releasing a large number of spores into the air, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the room is well-ventilated.

Given that your children are coughing and the mold has spread significantly, the situation likely exceeds a simple surface cleaning. The coughing suggests spores are already airborne. A professional inspection can identify the exact species and the extent of the issue, often using moisture meters to find hidden dampness within the wall. They will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores during removal, and most critically, rectify the condensation problem—often by improving insulation or adjusting AC settings to reduce the cold surface temperature. This comprehensive approach is necessary to prevent regrowth and protect your indoor air quality.
