Black mold in Dubai closet: call management or clean myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our bedroom closet on the inside wall has developed a bunch of black spots, and I'm pretty sure it's mold. It started getting worse after that really humid week we had a couple of weeks ago, and now our clothes are starting to smell a bit damp and funky. I'm worried about it spreading but don't know if it's something I can just wipe down with bleach myself.
Is this a common issue in Dubai apartments, and should I call the building management to handle it or is it safe for me to clean it on my own?

This is a very common issue in Dubai apartments, especially on interior walls where cool AC air meets warm, humid outdoor air, creating condensation. The recent humidity spike is a classic trigger. That damp, musty smell on your clothes confirms active mold growth.
For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Do not use bleach, as it is mostly water and can feed the mold deeper in the porous drywall. Use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Scrub gently, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the area is completely dry afterwards. The key is fixing the moisture source; a dehumidifier or silica gel packs in the closet can help. However, if the mold has penetrated the wall, is recurring after cleaning, or covers a larger area, this is a job for professionals. The mold you see is often just the surface manifestation of a larger colony inside the wall cavity. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to find the hidden source of dampness. Regarding building management: In Dubai, your tenancy contract and building bylaws dictate responsibility. Management is typically responsible for structural issues causing water intrusion from outside, like a leaking pipe in the wall or faulty external waterproofing. You are usually responsible for condensation due to internal climate and air circulation. It is still worth notifying them; they may send a technician to rule out any structural leaks from adjacent units or the building envelope. For a definitive diagnosis and remediation plan that addresses the root cause, a certified mold assessment is the most reliable path. |
