Can I clean mold myself or is it a bigger issue?« Back to Previous Page

The corner of my bedroom wall behind the wardrobe has started turning black and fuzzy, and I'm pretty sure it's mold. It's been ridiculously humid in my apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers these last few weeks even with the AC running constantly. Do you think this is something I can clean myself with bleach, or is it a sign of a bigger AC/humidity problem that needs a professional?

A small patch of mold on a surface can sometimes be cleaned with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), but your situation suggests a deeper issue. The location behind a wardrobe is a classic sign of poor air circulation and trapped humidity, which is a persistent problem in Dubai's climate, especially in areas like JLT near the water.
The constant AC use can ironically contribute by creating cold surfaces where warm, humid air condenses. If the mold is fuzzy and has penetrated the porous drywall or paint, surface cleaning is only a temporary fix. The underlying moisture problem must be addressed. For anything beyond a very small, superficial patch (less than one square foot), a professional inspection is advised to identify the moisture source—which could be a hidden condensation issue, a minor leak, or insufficient AC dehumidification. A proper assessment involves moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the root cause. Simply cleaning without fixing the humidity will guarantee its return. If the wall is soft or the area is large, remediation is needed to safely contain and remove affected materials to prevent spore dispersal. For verifiable results, the process should conclude with post-remediation testing to confirm the environment is back to a healthy baseline. |
