Black mold found in kids' room, who to call first?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I just found what looks like black mold behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We live in an older building in Deira and with the humidity lately, the walls never feel completely dry. Should I call the building management or get a professional mold remediation company in to check it out first?

Given the presence of visible black mold and your children's respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is the necessary first step before contacting building management. The persistent humidity in Deira creates ideal conditions for mold growth, especially in older buildings where insulation and ventilation may be inadequate. The type of mold must be identified, as some species are more problematic than others.

Building management is responsible for structural issues leading to moisture, such as leaks from external walls or plumbing within the building's core. However, since the mold is behind furniture, the initial cause could be condensation from temperature differences or a minor, hidden leak. A certified inspector can determine the moisture source and identify the mold species, providing you with a documented report.

This report is crucial. It transforms your complaint from a general concern into a specific, evidence-based request for remediation. In Dubai, building management is more likely to act promptly when presented with professional findings that pinpoint the cause and extent of the problem.

For a situation involving children's health, do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing the mold can release a high concentration of spores into the air, potentially worsening their cough. A proper remediation plan from a company with its own microbiology lab will include containment, air filtration, safe removal, and verification that the spore count has returned to acceptable levels. Start with the professional assessment to get definitive answers and a clear path forward.
