Can I remove black bathroom grout mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Deira apartment's bathroom has started turning black, especially behind the toilet where it's always a bit damp. I tried scrubbing it with a bleach spray, but it just faded a little and came back worse a week later. Given how humid it gets here, is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product, or should I just call a professional cleaning company to handle it properly?

Recurring black grout mold in a Dubai bathroom is a common issue due to our high humidity and condensation levels, often worsened by constant AC use creating temperature differentials. Bleach is frequently ineffective because it only bleaches the surface pigment and does not kill the root structure penetrating the porous grout.

For a small, surface-level patch, a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner (not just bleach) can help if applied correctly and the area is kept completely dry afterwards. However, if the mold returns quickly after cleaning or is located in a persistently damp area like behind the toilet, the moisture source is likely ongoing and the fungal growth is probably deeper than the surface.

In many Deira apartments with high humidity, the underlying issue is often inadequate ventilation or hidden moisture within the wall. Scrubbing can inadvertently release a high concentration of spores into the air. For persistent cases, a professional assessment is recommended to identify the extent of the growth and the moisture source. Companies with microbiology expertise can take surface samples to identify the mold type and provide a targeted remediation plan, which is more effective than repeated DIY attempts. The goal is to solve the dampness problem, not just temporarily clean the visible stain.
