Is bedroom mold causing my cough and stuffiness?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and a dry cough that goes away after I leave for work in JLT. I'm worried this mold is making me sick, especially with the humidity lately. How dangerous is this, and should I get a professional to test it or just clean it myself?

The symptoms you describe – a stuffy nose and dry cough that clear up when you leave the room – are classic signs of exposure to a damp indoor environment and are very commonly linked to mold. In Dubai's high humidity, condensation often forms on cold walls, especially behind large furniture like wardrobes that restrict airflow, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold.
Given that the black spots are actively spreading, this indicates an ongoing moisture issue. Simply wiping the visible mold is a temporary fix and will not address the root cause. Disturbing it yourself can also aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your symptoms. The type of mold is important; while many common household molds primarily cause allergic reactions, some can produce more significant irritants. For your health and to properly solve the problem, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. A certified inspector can identify the exact moisture source (e.g., a small plumbing leak, capillary rising damp, or condensation from AC temperature differentials) and take an air or surface sample for lab analysis. This identifies the species and concentration, confirming if it’s a type known to cause respiratory issues. Remediation then focuses on fixing the moisture problem first, followed by the safe removal of the contaminated materials. Addressing the root cause is the only way to prevent it from returning in our climate. |
