What's the fastest way to remove mold from AC leak??« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks and now I’ve just pulled the corner back to find a patch of black, fuzzy mold. It’s worse than I thought and I’m worried about my baby sleeping in here. What’s the absolute fastest way to deal with this properly in Dubai’s humidity?

That black fuzz is a serious concern, especially with a baby in the home. The fastest and safest method requires immediate action on two fronts: stopping the source and properly remediating the contamination.

First, shut off the AC unit at the circuit breaker to stop the leak and prevent further moisture spread. Soak up all standing water with towels. For the visible mold on the carpet, a temporary measure is to lightly mist the area with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water to suppress spore activity, but do not scrub it. Scrubbing can aerosolize toxic spores throughout the room. This is a stopgap only.

In Dubai’s high humidity, mold regrows rapidly without professional-grade drying and antimicrobial treatment. The carpet pad underneath is almost certainly saturated and heavily contaminated, requiring removal and disposal. The only way to ensure it's done properly and quickly is to engage a certified mold remediation provider. They will use containment barriers, HEPA air scrubbers, and industrial dehumidifiers to dry the structure and remove the biohazard safely, preventing cross-contamination to other rooms.

Concurrently, you must have a licensed AC technician repair the leak. The constant condensation from our year-round AC use is a primary cause of such indoor mold issues. For a case involving an infant, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is highly recommended to confirm the air quality is safe before the room is reoccupied. This entire process, from calling a pro to clearance testing, is the fastest way to a guaranteed result.
