Can I safely clean black mold myself in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It seems to have spread since the humidity really kicked in a few weeks ago. I'm worried it's from a small, hidden AC leak. Is this something I can safely clean with vinegar and bleach myself, or should I call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

It depends on the mold's size, cause, and your household's health. For a small patch (under one square foot) on a non-porous surface, a careful DIY approach can be sufficient.

First, identify and fix the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is often condensation from an AC unit or a small, hidden leak in the pipework, not just ambient humidity. Until the source is addressed, the mold will return. Mix a solution of detergent and water to scrub the visible growth off the wall's surface. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space, and vinegar is often ineffective on the porous surfaces like concrete or drywall that are common here.

However, professional remediation is strongly advised for larger areas, if the mold has returned after previous cleaning, or for anyone with respiratory sensitivities. The goal is not just to wipe it away but to properly contain the spores during removal and verify with testing that the underlying cause and contamination are resolved. Reputable companies in Dubai follow strict containment protocols to prevent cross-contamination and use industrial HEPA filtration to clean the air, which DIY methods cannot achieve. For a situation involving a potential AC leak, a professional inspection is the most reliable way to diagnose the exact source and ensure the remediation is complete.
