Black mold in AC: clean myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been blowing out a weird, damp smell for the past two weeks, and I just spotted some black speckles around the vent. We're in an older building in Jumeirah and I'm worried it's spreading inside the unit. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company to check the ducts?

For visible black speckles and a persistent damp smell, you should call a professional for an inspection. The smell indicates active microbial growth inside the unit or ductwork that you cannot see, and bleach is a surface-level solution that fails to address the root cause.

In Dubai's high humidity, AC systems are prime locations for mold due to constant condensation. An older building in Jumeirah likely has an aging system more prone to issues. A proper inspection involves accessing the internal cooling coils and ductwork to assess the full extent of contamination, which requires specialized tools and knowledge of HVAC systems.

While you can clean the visible specks on the vent cover with a diluted detergent, this is only a temporary measure. Disturbing mold without proper containment can inadvertently release spores throughout your bedroom. A professional assessment will determine if the growth is limited or widespread, as contamination deep within the system requires specific antimicrobial treatments and cleaning protocols to resolve effectively and prevent rapid regrowth.

The most reliable approach is to have the system inspected and tested. A reputable provider will use lab analysis to identify the mold type and concentration, which dictates the necessary remediation steps. This evidence-based method is the only way to confirm the problem is solved and your indoor air quality is restored.
