Should we remove this black mold ourselves or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some stored luggage. Since last month, both my wife and I have had constant stuffy noses and headaches that clear up when we're at the office. I'm really worried the mold is the cause. What's the most effective way to safely remove it ourselves, or is this a job for a professional company in Dubai?

Given your symptoms that improve when away from home, this mold is a likely cause and should be addressed promptly. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use creates ideal conditions for mold growth in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets.

For a patch smaller than one square meter (approx. 10 sq ft), a careful DIY approach may be sufficient. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Allow it to dry completely. Fix the moisture source; this is often condensation from an AC vent or a small leak.

However, given that the mold was hidden and you are both experiencing health effects, the infestation might be more extensive than what is visible. Mold can spread behind drywall and under flooring. In this case, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full scope. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden moisture and mold.

For remediation, Dubai has specific standards aligned with international guidelines like IICRC. A certified professional will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to prevent spore spread throughout your home, and safely remove contaminated materials. The most critical step they provide is identifying and rectifying the root cause of the moisture to prevent recurrence, which is often the most challenging part for DIY efforts. Request a company that provides before-and-after testing to verify the air quality is safe.
