Should I hire a professional for bathroom mold or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bathroom in Jumeirah has had this damp, earthy smell for the last couple of months that I just can't get rid of, and now I’m seeing these small black spots growing along the bottom edge of the wall near the shower. We run the exhaust fan, but the humidity just seems to stick around. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold removal company involved, or can I handle this myself with a store-bought spray?

That persistent smell and visible black spots indicate active mold growth, which is very common in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and condensation. You can attempt a DIY approach if the affected area is small—smaller than a standard A4 sheet of paper—and confined to a non-porous surface like tiles.

For a small area, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store, not just bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like grout and drywall. Scrub thoroughly, ensure the area is completely dry, and address the moisture source by verifying your exhaust fan is actually moving sufficient air.

However, given the duration of the smell and the growth on a wall edge—which is often a porous surface—this likely requires professional assessment. The mold may have spread behind the tiles or under the silicone sealant, which DIY methods cannot address. In the UAE climate, hidden mold will continue to return if the moisture issue isn't fully resolved.

A professional inspection will identify the exact moisture source—often a small leak, inadequate sealing, or insufficient ventilation—and the extent of the spread. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside walls. For removal, they follow protocols to contain the spores and remove contaminated materials safely, which is crucial if anyone in the home has allergies or respiratory sensitivities. The goal is not just to clean what you see, but to solve the dampness problem permanently.
