Can I remove this bathroom mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bathroom in Jumeirah has had this damp, earthy smell ever since the humidity really kicked in a couple of months ago. I finally pulled out the wicker laundry hamper today and found a bunch of black and green fuzzy patches spreading on the wall behind it. I’m pretty handy, but is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and vinegar, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

It depends entirely on the extent. For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot) that you discovered early, a thorough DIY approach can be effective. For anything larger, or if there's any suspicion it has spread behind tiles or into the drywall, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to prevent recurrence and identify the moisture source.

In your Jumeirah bathroom, the constant high humidity and condensation from showers create an ideal environment for mold, especially behind furniture that restricts airflow like your hamper. For a DIY attempt, a vinegar solution is more effective than bleach on porous surfaces like painted drywall, as vinegar can kill the roots while bleach often only removes surface discoloration. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and address the moisture by improving ventilation—run the exhaust fan longer and consider a dehumidifier.

However, if the mold returns quickly, that indicates a persistent moisture issue within the wall cavity that DIY methods cannot resolve. Dubai's climate means hidden condensation within AC ducts or walls is a common, hidden problem. Professional remediation is warranted to properly contain the area, remove contaminated materials, and use industrial equipment to dry the structure completely, preventing regrowth. They can also conduct air and surface testing to verify the spore count has returned to a safe level.
