Is black mold urgent heath risk for coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it's on the wall that faces the outside and the paint is starting to bubble. With this humidity, I'm worried it's spreading fast. How urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, and is it a health risk for my family?

Black mold on an interior wall, especially with visible paint bubbling, indicates a persistent moisture issue that should be addressed promptly. The wall facing outside is a common trouble spot in Dubai due to thermal bridging, where the temperature difference between the hot exterior and cool, air-conditioned interior causes condensation inside the wall cavity. This hidden dampness allows mold to thrive unseen for long periods.

For children with a persistent cough, this is a legitimate concern. Mold exposure is a known respiratory irritant and can exacerbate allergy and asthma symptoms. The urgency for a professional inspection is high, not necessarily for emergency remediation, but to properly diagnose the source and extent. The visible spots are likely just a small part of the colony.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can agitate the spores and increase airborne levels, potentially worsening your children's symptoms. A proper assessment involves using a moisture meter to find the water source and often an air or surface sample sent to a microbiology lab to identify the mold species. This confirms the health risk and guides the remediation protocol, which must include fixing the underlying moisture intrusion to prevent it from returning. In the meantime, improving ventilation in the room can help reduce spore concentration.
