Mold on humid external wall: DIY fix or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots appearing on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s been so humid lately. What’s the best way to handle this myself, or should I call my landlord first?

Document the mold with clear photos and notify your landlord in writing immediately. In Dubai, landlords are generally responsible for addressing structural issues like this, especially if it's related to external wall seepage or inadequate insulation, which is common with older buildings facing the humid sea air.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, simply wiping the surface is a temporary fix. The root cause is almost certainly trapped moisture and condensation behind the wardrobe on that cold external wall.

Moving the furniture away from the wall to improve air circulation is a crucial first step. Using a dehumidifier in the room can help manage the ambient moisture that AC alone often can't handle during peak humidity.

If the mold returns quickly, the spotting is extensive, or there's a musty smell, a professional inspection is warranted. They can identify if the issue is internal condensation or more serious external water intrusion that the landlord must repair. For renters, having a certified expert’s report is the most effective way to ensure the landlord completes a proper, lasting remediation.
