Is this mold in my son's closet dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black speckles growing along the bottom of the wall in our youngest son's bedroom closet. It's been extra humid lately and he's started having a bit of a persistent cough, which is really worrying me. Is this something I can handle with a DIY cleaner from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Black speckles in a closet, combined with a persistent cough in a child, should be taken seriously. In Dubai's humid climate, this is a common issue, especially in enclosed spaces with poor air circulation.
While not all mold is highly toxic, any mold can cause irritation, particularly in children and those with respiratory sensitivities. The cough could be a reaction to the spores. Common household molds like Cladosporium, which often appears as black speckles, are known allergens. The real concern is identifying the moisture source—it could be condensation from the AC, a hidden leak in the wall, or humidity being trapped in the closed closet. A small patch (under one square foot) on a non-porous surface can sometimes be addressed with careful DIY using a vinegar or diluted bleach solution. However, because it's on a wall (a porous surface) and due to your son's health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY can often disturb spores without addressing the root moisture problem, causing them to spread. Professionals use moisture meters to find the water source and air sampling to identify the spore types and concentration levels. This diagnostic approach is crucial for effective remediation, not just surface cleaning. They will also advise on humidity control, which is a constant battle in the UAE. For a child's room, the peace of mind from a proper assessment is worth it. |
