Can I clean black mold myself with bleach and vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. Is this something I can tackle with bleach and vinegar from Carrefour, or is this a sign I need to call a professional cleaning company?

Cleaning small areas of black mold yourself is possible, but not with bleach or vinegar alone. Bleach only removes the visible colour and is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall or wood where the roots remain. Vinegar can kill some surface mold but won't address the underlying moisture problem.

In Dubai's climate, this is almost always a sign of excess humidity or a hidden condensation issue, often from year-round AC use creating cold spots behind furniture. The root cause must be fixed, or the mold will return quickly.

For a small patch (under one square foot), use a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the room is well-ventilated. However, given that your children are coughing and the mold is behind a large furniture piece, this suggests a more established problem. The coughing could be a reaction to the spores now being disturbed.

For health concerns and anything beyond a very small, superficial patch, a professional inspection is advised. They can identify the exact moisture source and the mold species through lab testing, which is critical for determining the right remediation approach, especially in a bedroom. DIY attempts on larger infestations can often aerosolize spores and worsen the problem.
