How to eliminate and prevent closet mold permanently?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has had this musty smell for weeks that I can't get rid of. I finally pulled everything out yesterday and found a few small black speckled patches in the corner where the wall meets the carpet. We keep the AC running constantly, so I'm worried the humidity is getting trapped in there. What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

First, address the immediate issue safely. For small patches (under 1 square foot), wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning agent, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into porous materials like drywall and carpet.

Prevention is the only permanent solution. In Dubai's climate, your constantly running AC is likely creating a cold surface on that interior wall, causing condensation and trapping humidity in the enclosed closet space. This is a common issue. To prevent recurrence, you must increase air circulation and reduce moisture. Leave the closet door open for several hours each day, and consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Ensure clothes are completely dry before storing them and avoid overpacking the closet.

For a lasting fix, assess the wall itself. The mould on the surface may be a symptom of a larger problem within the wall cavity, especially if there's a hidden plumbing leak or significant thermal bridging. A professional inspection with a borescope can verify this. If the mould returns after cleaning, or if the affected area is larger than a square foot, professional remediation is advised to avoid spreading spores. They can also apply anti-microbial coatings to inhibit future growth. The key is managing the micro-climate in that closet to counteract our high ambient humidity.
