Mold in Dubai bedroom: professional cost or DIY with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's spread behind the wall. What's the ballpark cost for a professional mold inspection and remediation company in Dubai, and is this something I can tackle myself with bleach or is that a bad idea?

Black mold in a Dubai bedroom closet is a common issue, driven by our high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. Storing clothes restricts airflow, creating a perfect microenvironment for mold growth on cold exterior walls.

Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is mostly water, which can feed the mold roots deep in porous materials like drywall. Bleach also fails to address the underlying moisture problem and can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space, especially when mixed with other cleaners. For a small, surface-level patch on a non-porous surface, a solution of distilled white vinegar can be more effective and safer for initial cleaning. However, if the mold is fuzzy and you suspect it has spread behind the wall, this indicates a more serious, established colony.

Professional inspection is recommended here. Costs vary significantly based on the infestation's extent and the required remediation scope, from containment and air scrubbing to potential wall removal. Reputable companies provide a detailed assessment and quote only after an on-site inspection, which often includes moisture mapping and sometimes air or surface sampling to identify the species. The key is to first identify and rectify the moisture source—often poor insulation on a cold wall or internal condensation—before any cleaning or removal occurs. Otherwise, the mold will almost certainly return.
