Should I handle this black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the musty smell is starting to get really strong. Given how quickly this heat and moisture can make things worse, is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can I handle it myself with a bleach solution this weekend?

A small patch you just noticed is often manageable yourself, but the location and rapid onset in this humidity are red flags. Black mould on an exterior wall suggests a condensation or water intrusion issue, which a bleach wipe won't fix. The persistent musty smell confirms active growth.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt cleaning. Do not use bleach; it is mostly water and can feed the mould deeper into porous surfaces like drywall. Use a dedicated mould remover or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and monitor it. However, given the wall is exterior-facing, the root cause is likely a thermal bridge causing condensation or a tiny leak, both common in Dubai's climate where ACs run constantly against extreme outdoor heat.

If the mould returns within a week, the smell persists after cleaning, or you discover the patch is larger than initially visible (often the case behind baseboards), you need a professional inspection. They will use a moisture meter to find the hidden water source and recommend remediation. Addressing the underlying moisture is the only permanent solution. For health concerns, especially with a strong smell, a lab test can identify the species and inform the best cleanup approach.
