How to clean and prevent black mold in shower ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling above my shower in my Mirdif villa has started to get these black splotches, and it’s been spreading over the last couple of weeks. I think the exhaust fan isn't powerful enough, and with everyone taking multiple showers a day, the moisture just sits there. What's the most effective way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

That black splotchy growth is almost certainly mold, thriving on the moisture from your showers. In Mirdif villas, this is a common issue due to our high humidity and daily routines. The root cause you've identified—an underpowered exhaust fan and lingering moisture—is spot on.

For cleaning, wear a mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) applied directly to the affected area on the ceiling is effective for surface growth. Scrub gently, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse. Ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated during this process.

Preventing its return is more critical. Your exhaust fan is key; it should run during and for at least 20-30 minutes after each shower. If it's weak, upgrading to a higher-capacity model is a necessary investment. Wiping down wet surfaces after use and occasionally leaving the bathroom door open to allow drier AC air to circulate can help reduce ambient humidity. For a persistent or recurring issue, the mold may have penetrated the ceiling board itself, especially if there's any hidden leakage from above. In such cases, cleaning the surface is only temporary.

A professional inspection can determine if the drywall needs replacement and identify any less obvious sources of moisture. They can also conduct air quality testing to verify the spore count has returned to a safe level after remediation, which is the only way to be certain the problem is resolved for good.
