How to remove mold from clothes and storage room safely?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Mirdif has felt extra humid ever since the heavy rains a few weeks back. I’ve just pulled out the winter clothes from the storage room under the stairs and found a bunch of my kids' jackets and sweaters covered in fuzzy black spots. I'm really worried about their health, especially with my youngest’s asthma. What's the fastest and most effective way to clean these clothes and treat the storage space to make sure it's safe?

Act quickly to prevent further spread, as mould can exacerbate asthma symptoms. For the clothes, do not attempt to wash them normally. Take them outside to brush off the dry, loose spores. For washable fabrics, a hot wash (60°C) with a cup of white vinegar or a mould-killing additive is effective, followed by sun-drying, which is a powerful natural disinfectant. For delicate items, professional dry cleaning is the safest option, but you must inform them about the mould beforehand.
The storage room itself is the primary concern. The high humidity from the recent rains, combined with a confined, poorly ventilated space, creates an ideal breeding ground. Empty the entire room. Clean all surfaces with a solution of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or a dedicated mould-cleaning product, ensuring you wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, surface cleaning alone is often insufficient. The mould you see on clothes and walls is the fruiting body; the root system (mycelium) can penetrate porous materials like drywall, wood, and cardboard boxes. This hidden growth will continue to release spores and cause recurring problems. The musty odour is a clear indicator of this persistent issue. Given the villa's location, the high ambient humidity, and your child's asthma, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source of the dampness—which could be condensation from AC ducts, a small leak, or capillary rise from the foundation—and take air/surface samples to identify the mould species. This science-driven approach is critical for effective remediation and ensuring the space is truly safe for your family. In Dubai's climate, controlling humidity with a dehumidifier in such storage areas is often a necessary long-term solution. |
