Can I clean moldy AC vent myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah Park villa seems to be blowing a weird, damp smell into the master bedroom, and we’ve both been waking up with stuffy noses. I found some black speckles around the air vent when I took the cover off. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspector to check the ducts?

Clean the visible mold on the vent cover yourself only if the growth is minimal and confined to that one spot. A solution of one part bleach to ten parts water can be effective, but never spray it into the open duct. The smell and your symptoms, however, suggest a larger problem inside the AC system or ductwork that you cannot see or safely address.
For your situation in a Jumeirah Park villa, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The persistent damp smell and your physical reactions are key indicators. Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use create constant condensation inside units, which is a perfect breeding ground for mold deep within the evaporator coils or ducts. Cleaning the vent alone won't stop the source. A proper inspection involves using borescopes to view inside ducts and often includes air or surface sampling to identify the mold species. This is critical, as some types common in AC systems can exacerbate allergies and respiratory issues. Verifying the extent of the contamination is the only way to know if a full system cleaning and remediation is required. |
