Is closet mold an emergency needing immediate action?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed a few small patches of black mold on the leather shoes and bags stored inside. I just noticed it this morning and it’s been incredibly humid lately. Given how quickly things can get worse here, is this something I need to deal with as an emergency this weekend, or can it wait until I call a professional on Monday?

In Dubai's climate, this requires immediate attention but likely not a full-scale emergency requiring 24/7 service. The high humidity, often above 80%, provides the perfect environment for mold to spread rapidly from a few patches to a more significant infestation over just a few days.

Your first step is to isolate the affected items. Remove the shoes and bags from the closet and place them in a well-ventilated area, like a balcony, to dry and prevent further contamination of the closet space. Do not attempt to clean the leather yourself, as improper methods can set the stains and spread spores.

For the closet itself, you can wipe down the interior walls and shelves with a dilute vinegar solution to help inhibit growth on the surface until a professional assessment can be made. The core issue is identifying the moisture source. On an interior wall, this is often due to condensation from an AC supply duct running through the space or a slight drop in temperature creating a cold surface where moisture condenses. A professional inspection will use a thermal camera and moisture meter to locate the exact cause.

You can safely manage it this weekend by isolating the items and improving ventilation, but you should call for a professional diagnosis on Monday. Leaving it untreated for weeks allows it to spread into the wall cavity, which turns a simple surface cleaning into a larger remediation project. A proper assessment will determine if this is a surface issue or something more serious.
