How to prevent mold in closet without throwing everything out?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has a recurring problem. Every winter when the weather gets a bit cooler and more humid, I start to see small black spots forming on the leather shoes and bags I have stored in there. I run the AC, but I guess the closet doesn't get enough airflow. What’s the best way to prevent this mold from coming back every year without having to throw everything out?

The black spots are likely mildew or mold due to localized condensation, a very common issue in Dubai villas during the cooler, humid winter months. The temperature difference between the cool outside wall and the warm, humid indoor air creates a perfect environment for growth, especially in enclosed spaces with poor airflow like closets.
Start by thoroughly cleaning the affected items with a leather-safe mold remover. For the closet itself, wipe all surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted detergent, then ensure it is completely bone-dry. The key to prevention is managing humidity and airflow. Since running the AC alone isn't sufficient for the enclosed space, you need to introduce airflow into the closet. Leave the closet doors open for several hours each day to allow conditioned air to circulate. For a more permanent solution, consider installing a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside the closet, or even a low-wattage incandescent bulb (kept safe from fabrics) to generate a small amount of heat and reduce dampness. For the villa's structure, ensure that the external wall has no hidden leaks from occasional winter rains and that the room's AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a faulty drain pan can contribute to overall humidity. If the problem is severe, recurring, or you suspect hidden growth inside the wall, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the exact condensation source. In many cases, a targeted application of an anti-microbial coating by a certified technician after a proper cleaning can provide a long-term barrier against recurrence. |
