Can I remove toxic mold myself with vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I'm starting to suspect it's the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is on the coldest side of the villa. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to clean for Eid. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar solution from Carrefour, or do I need to call in one of those professional mold removal companies?

Vinegar is an effective DIY solution for surface-level mold on non-porous materials like glass or tiles, but it is not a reliable method for toxic or systemic mold problems, especially in Dubai's climate. The black spots behind your wardrobe, likely caused by condensation from your AC on the villa's cold side, indicate a persistent moisture issue that vinegar cannot address.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it with distilled white vinegar, but scrubbing alone often disperses harmful spores. The primary goal is to identify and eliminate the moisture source; otherwise, the mold will return within weeks. In a villa, this often requires checking for thermal bridging in the wall, ensuring proper AC drainage, and improving ventilation.

Given the symptoms you describe and the location, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. What appears as a small spot can hide extensive growth inside the wall cavity. DIY methods can aggravate the situation by disturbing toxic species like Stachybotrys without proper containment. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the source and HEPA filtration to safely remove the biomass. The only way to confirm the mold type and its potential toxicity is through a lab analysis of a tape-lift or air sample. For health concerns with children present, an assessment is the safest first step.
