How to clean mold off clothes and fix AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little for the past month, and I just pulled out my winter clothes to find green and black fuzzy mold all over a couple of my favorite jackets. It's a nightmare! I’m in a villa in Jumeirah and the humidity has been awful lately. What’s the best way to clean this off the fabric without ruining it, and who should I call to fix the AC unit properly?

First, address the clothes. For mold on fabric, take them outside to avoid spreading spores indoors. Brush off the dry mold with a soft brush. For washable fabrics, a soak in white vinegar or a solution of borax and hot water can help. Sun-drying is highly effective in our climate, as UV light naturally inhibits mold growth. For delicate or irreplaceable items, a professional dry cleaner experienced with mold damage is the safest option to avoid ruining them.
The root cause is the AC leak. In Dubai's high humidity, any moisture from a leaking unit creates an instant breeding ground for mold inside the closet and potentially within the AC system and ductwork itself. This requires two separate professionals. A certified HVAC technician needs to fix the leak. The most common causes here are a clogged condensate drain line or a malfunctioning drain pan, both exacerbated by our constant AC use. They should also ensure the unit's insulation is intact to prevent future condensation. However, fixing the leak doesn't address the existing mold contamination inside the unit or the closet space. For that, you need a mold assessment. The humidity has likely allowed mold to colonize areas you can't see. A proper inspection, often involving air and surface sampling sent to a microbiology lab, identifies the spore types and concentration. This report dictates the necessary remediation scope to ensure it's fully resolved, not just temporarily cleaned. For a villa in Jumeirah, this is a common issue, and a science-driven approach is the only way to verify the environment is returned to a healthy state. |
