Black mold in closet: urgent professional or DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some dark black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to have gotten worse. My main worry is how serious this is—do I need to call a professional immediately this week, or is it something I can handle myself with a vinegar solution over the weekend?

The black spots in your closet are likely mold growth, a common issue here due to Dubai's high humidity interacting with cold surfaces from constant AC use. The wall facing outside is a typical condensation point, and the recent humidity surge has accelerated its growth.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be attempted. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a diluted vinegar or baking soda solution, not bleach, as bleach only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into porous surfaces like drywall. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan afterwards.

However, if the mold returns quickly, has a strong musty odour, covers a larger area, or if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible spot may only be a fraction of the actual growth, which can be inside the wall cavity. Professionals use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent and identify the source of moisture, which is critical for a permanent fix. They can also perform lab analysis to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol.

In many cases here, the root cause is a breach in the building's external vapour barrier or internal condensation, issues that DIY cleaning won't resolve. For a confirmed, persistent problem, professional remediation that includes containment, air scrubbing, and addressing the moisture source is the only way to ensure it is properly handled.
