Could bathroom mold be causing my kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the last two weeks and we can't figure out why. I just pulled back the curtain in our master bathroom in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the edge where the wall meets the ceiling. It must have been growing behind there for ages because of the humidity. Could this be the reason they're so sick, and is it dangerous enough that we need to leave the apartment while it gets cleaned?

Yes, the bathroom mold you described is very likely contributing to your children's persistent coughing. In Dubai's humid climate, especially in bathrooms with poor ventilation, mold thrives and releases spores that are common respiratory irritants.
The type of mold is important. While the term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys, which can produce mycotoxins, many other common black-colored molds like Cladosporium or Aspergillus are also significant irritants. All can cause coughing, wheezing, sore throats, and worsened allergy or asthma symptoms, particularly in children whose respiratory systems are more sensitive. The continuous exposure from a large, hidden patch explains why their symptoms have persisted for weeks. For a growth of that size, especially if it's been hidden, professional assessment is strongly recommended. Remediation is more than just wiping it away. It involves containing the area to prevent spores from spreading throughout your apartment, safely removing the contaminated materials (like the damaged drywall), and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. A proper inspection can also identify the source of the moisture—whether it's a hidden leak, insufficient sealing, or condensation from your AC system—which must be fixed to prevent it from returning immediately. You do not necessarily need to vacate the apartment, but keeping the children completely away from the affected area during the assessment and remediation process is crucial. For verification, a company with its own microbiology lab can take samples to identify the species, which confirms the potential health risk and ensures the cleanup method is appropriate. Addressing this thoroughly will likely bring your children significant relief. |
