How to treat and prevent mold in Dubai closets?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots along the edges of our bedroom closet in Jumeirah Village Circle. The room is always cold from the AC but feels a bit damp. I'm worried it's mold and I want to stop it from spreading to our clothes.
What's the best way to treat this myself and are there any specific dehumidifiers or products that work best in Dubai's climate to prevent it from coming back?

That damp feeling and black spots are classic signs of condensation-induced mold, very common in Dubai closets on exterior walls. The constant AC cooling of the closet's interior against the warm, humid air seeping through the wall creates the perfect damp environment for growth.
For treatment, first identify the extent. If the mold covers a small area (under approximately one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, then wipe dry. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the root structure. For porous surfaces like drywall or the back of the closet, the mold may have penetrated too deeply, and cutting out and replacing the material is often the only permanent solution. To prevent recurrence, you must address the moisture source. A small desiccant dehumidifier or dehumidifying bags placed inside the closet can help, but they are a temporary fix. The core issue is the temperature differential. Ensure the closet is well-ventilated; leave doors ajar occasionally and avoid overpacking clothes. If the closet has an AC vent, ensure it is fully open and that cold air is circulating inside. For closets on external walls, check the building's external sealant and insulation, as this is often where humid air infiltrates. Given the persistent damp feeling you described, the mold growth behind the wall is likely more extensive than what's visible. In such cases, a professional inspection with a borescope to see inside the wall cavity is recommended to assess the true scope and prevent it from spreading to your belongings. This is a frequent issue in JVC due to the specific construction methods and high humidity. |
