How to safely clean black mold in a damp closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has felt damp for a while, and I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes to find several black, fuzzy patches on the back wall and on a leather jacket. We’ve had the AC running constantly, but the room still feels humid. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, and is it safe to stay in the room?

Black mold growth in a damp closet is a common issue in Dubai, primarily driven by high humidity and condensation forming on cooler exterior walls, even with the AC running. The AC may be set too high, causing the unit to short-cycle and not run long enough to properly dehumidify the air.
For your safety, address the moisture source first. The room feels humid because condensation is forming on that wall, providing the water mold needs to grow. Lower the AC temperature slightly to encourage longer running cycles for better dehumidification, and ensure no furniture is blocking the AC vents. A standalone dehumidifier in the room can help significantly. Before cleaning, assess the extent. If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, or if it has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the leather jacket, professional remediation is strongly advised to prevent disturbing a large colony and spreading spores. For smaller, surface-level growth on a non-porous wall, you can clean it yourself with proper precautions. Wear an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the bottom with a towel. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar with four parts water. Lightly mist the moldy patches to dampen them and prevent spores from becoming airborne, then scrub with a disposable cloth. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push the mold deeper into porous surfaces. After scrbbing, wipe the area with a clean, damp cloth and allow it to dry completely. Discard all cleaning materials in a sealed bag. The leather jacket should be assessed by a specialist cleaner, as mold can permanently damage it. It is safe to stay in the room if the area is small and you’ve contained the work properly. However, if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, allergies, or a compromised immune system, consider relocating them until the cleaning is complete and the area is dry. The underlying humidity issue must be solved; otherwise, the mold will return within weeks. If the dampness persists, a professional inspection can identify hidden condensation points and provide a targeted solution. |
