Can I remove kids' closet mold myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I just found patches of black and green mold in the corner of their bedroom closet where we store their winter clothes. We've lived in this Jumeirah Park villa for 2 years and just noticed this, probably from the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company?

For a small, surface-level patch under 1 square foot, you can attempt DIY cleaning. However, given it's in a child's bedroom and you're seeing both black and green growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the species and the moisture source. The mold you see is likely just the surface growth; the real concern is the hidden moisture problem within the wall or under the flooring that caused it.
In Dubai's climate, high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use create perfect conditions for mold. The closet, especially against an exterior wall in Jumeirah Park, is a common problem area due to restricted airflow. Simply wiping the visible mold won't solve the underlying issue, and it will almost certainly return. If you proceed yourself, avoid bleach. It is mostly water and can feed mold growth inside porous materials like drywall. A distilled white vinegar solution or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner is better for non-porous surfaces. You must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles to avoid inhaling spores or causing skin irritation. Contain the area with plastic sheeting to prevent spreading spores to other parts of the house. For anything larger than a small patch, or if the mold has penetrated the drywall or backing of the closet, professional remediation is necessary. They will use containment barriers, HEPA air scrubbers, and industrial dehumidifiers to properly remove the material and address the moisture. The most critical step they provide is a post-remediation verification test to confirm spore counts are back to safe, ambient levels. Given the health symptoms, identifying and resolving this properly is the priority. |
