How to safely remove black mold near kids' bed?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the last couple of weeks and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall in our Mushrif villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading behind it, probably from the humidity. I’m panicking because they sleep right next to it. What’s the safest and fastest way to get rid of this without putting my family at risk?

First, isolate the area immediately. Move the children and their bedding to another room and keep the door to the contaminated room closed to prevent spores from spreading through the house. Do not attempt to dry-scrub or vacuum the mold, as this will aerosolize the spores.

In Dubai's climate, this is almost certainly a moisture issue. The wall behind the wardrobe is likely a cold spot from the AC, causing condensation that the absorbent masonry soaks up, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold. The fastest initial step is to address the humidity source. Run a dehumidifier in the room and ensure your AC is set to a consistent, reasonable temperature to minimize drastic temperature swings that cause condensation.

For removal, the safest approach depends on the extent. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself wearing an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Use a mixture of detergent and water, scrubbing the area. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous surfaces. However, given the location near a child's bed and the description of a "huge patch," professional assessment is strongly recommended. The mold may have penetrated deeply into the wall or behind it.

A professional inspector can use a moisture meter to identify the exact source of water intrusion and take air or swab samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type. This is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol. Remediation involves containing the area with plastic sheeting, using HEPA air scrubbers to filter the air, and safely removing contaminated materials. They will also apply EPA-approved biocides to prevent regrowth.

Finally, the root cause must be fixed. This often involves improving ventilation behind the furniture, treating the wall with a waterproofing sealant, or adding insulation to prevent future condensation. Simply cleaning the visible mold without solving the moisture problem will lead to its return within weeks.
