Dehumidifier or fan for moldy closet near bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom’s walk-in closet shares a wall with the bathroom, and I’ve just pulled out my winter jackets to find several of them covered in fuzzy black mold. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I suspect the lack of air circulation in there is the main culprit. I’m getting it professionally cleaned, but what’s the best long-term solution to stop this from happening again every season? Should I install a small dehumidifier or a ventilation fan in the closet itself?

A small dehumidifier is the more effective long-term solution for your closet. Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer and the recent winter rain season, creates the perfect environment for mold on stored items. A dehumidifier will actively remove the moisture from the air that the mold spores need to grow, addressing the root cause.

While a ventilation fan would improve air circulation, it would only pull in more of Dubai's naturally humid air from outside the closet, which may not be sufficient to lower the humidity level below the 60% threshold where mold thrives.

For a closet adjacent to a bathroom, also ensure the bathroom's exhaust fan is functioning properly and is used during and for at least 20 minutes after showers to prevent moisture from migrating through the shared wall. Store clothes in breathable garment bags and avoid overpacking the closet to allow air to circulate around your items.

If the mold growth was extensive, a professional inspection is wise to check for hidden moisture within the wall cavity from potential plumbing leaks or condensation, which a dehumidifier alone cannot solve. They can also confirm the mold type, as some species common in damp indoor environments here can cause more significant irritation.
