Black shower grout: DIY clean or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grouting between the tiles in my ensuite shower in Jumeirah has turned completely black over the past couple of months. It's spreading to the ceiling and the damp, earthy smell is really strong, especially in the mornings. Is this something I can tackle with a good scrub and some vinegar, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service here in Dubai?

Black grout spreading to the ceiling with a strong earthy smell indicates a serious mold issue, not just surface staining. In Dubai's high humidity, bathroom condensation provides constant moisture, allowing mold to penetrate deep into porous grout and even the substrate behind the tiles.
A scrub with vinegar or bleach will only remove surface discoloration temporarily; the root colony will regrow within weeks. For an infestation of this scale, a deep clean is unlikely to be sufficient. The smell suggests potential growth behind the tiles, which requires professional assessment. Professional remediation is advised here. They will diagnose the moisture source (like a leak or insufficient sealing) and use industrial-grade antimicrobials to treat the area. In many cases, removing and replacing the compromised grout is the only permanent solution to prevent recurrence and structural damage. After remediation, run the bathroom exhaust fan for 30 minutes after showers and wipe down wet surfaces to manage humidity. Consider a small dehumidifier if the smell persists, as this is a common challenge in Jumeirah's coastal villas. |
