How to safely clean mold in closet and tell landlord?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has felt damp for a couple of months, but after I finally pulled everything out to reorganize, I found a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the back wall and some of our shoes. It’s definitely worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be calling my landlord about it immediately?

The dampness and black mold in your closet is a common issue in Dubai's climate, especially on exterior walls where condensation can form from the constant AC use. You should absolutely inform your landlord immediately. Under Dubai rental law (RERA), the landlord is typically responsible for addressing the source of moisture, which is likely a leak or significant condensation from inadequate insulation. Document the issue with clear photos and a written notification.

For your safety, do not attempt to clean a large or fuzzy patch yourself. Disturbing it will release spores. For a very small area (under one square foot), you can carefully wipe it with a cloth dipped in a diluted white vinegar or a specialized mold-cleaning solution, wearing an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem.

The fuzzy texture suggests active growth that has a established structure, and the recurring dampness indicates a persistent water source. The safest and most effective approach is a professional inspection. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to find the exact source of the water intrusion and take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to identify the mold type, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. Simply cleaning the surface without fixing the leak guarantees it will return. Your landlord will need this professional assessment to authorize and complete the permanent repair.
