How to safely remove black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it's gotten worse. What's the most effective way to remove this safely, and should I call a professional company or is this a DIY job?

Black mold in closets on exterior walls is very common in Dubai due to the high humidity and temperature differential causing condensation. The wall is likely colder than the room's air, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold, especially with organic materials like cotton clothes stored against it.
For a small, contained area (under one square meter), you can attempt DIY removal. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Move all affected items out. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, or a diluted bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water), and scrub the area. Thoroughly dry it with a fan afterwards. Never mix vinegar and bleach. However, DIY only addresses the visible growth. The real issue is the moisture source. In many cases, the mold has penetrated the wallboard or plaster behind the surface. If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or has a strong musty odor, the problem is more extensive than it appears. Professional remediation is strongly advised in these scenarios. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden moisture source and extent of growth. Proper remediation involves containment of the area, HEPA filtration, and safe removal of contaminated porous materials like drywall to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the home. Given Dubai's climate, addressing the root cause—often insufficient insulation on the cold wall or indoor humidity above 60%—is crucial to prevent recurrence. |
