Urgent to fix bedroom closet mold or DIY with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, where our winter clothes are stored. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and the room always feels a bit damp even with the AC running constantly. With the humidity about to get worse, how urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with a bleach spray this weekend?

That black patch in your closet requires immediate attention, not necessarily panic. Given its location on an exterior wall and the persistent damp feeling, this indicates a condensation issue, which is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials. Bleach is not the right solution here; it only removes the surface stain and does not address the moisture source or the root of the problem.

The dampness suggests the mold is likely growing into the wall material itself, such as the drywall or paint. A DIY bleach spray will leave the root system intact, allowing it to return, often worse, within weeks. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself with a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold remover, but you must first identify and rectify the moisture source.

However, considering the UAE's climate and the fact the humidity is about to rise, this problem will only intensify. The most critical step is a professional inspection to determine if this is simple surface condensation or a more serious issue like a hidden leak in the wall or inadequate insulation. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact cause. A company with its own microbiology lab can also identify the species, which informs the safest and most effective remediation strategy.

For your health and to prevent structural damage, get an assessment. In the meantime, improve air circulation around that closet, ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, and consider using a dehumidifier in that room.
