black mold and kids' cough: urgent doctor visit needed?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the past two weeks, and I just found a bunch of black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We're in an older building in Deira and I'm worried the recent humidity made it worse. How quickly do we need to get this professionally cleaned, and should I take them to a doctor immediately?

Yes, you should take your children to a doctor promptly for an evaluation. A persistent cough for two weeks, especially when coupled with the discovery of mold, is a significant health indicator that needs medical assessment. The doctor can determine if the cough is allergy-related, an irritant response, or something else entirely.

Given Dubai's high humidity, especially recently, and the age of buildings in Deira where condensation can be an issue, that black mold is likely active. Mold growth behind furniture is common, as these areas have poor air circulation from the AC, allowing moisture to accumulate. For infants, immunocompromised individuals, or those with asthma, some mold species can pose a more serious respiratory risk.

You need a professional mold inspection to assess the full extent. The visible spots are often just a small part of the problem, as the root cause is usually hidden moisture within the wall. A proper inspection identifies the species and the moisture source—whether it's a internal leak, penetrating damp, or condensation from AC units. Remediation is not just cleaning the surface; it involves fixing the water issue, containing the area to prevent spore spread, and properly removing contaminated materials.

Until it's handled, keep the children out of that room and ensure your AC's filters are clean to help reduce spore circulation. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide the necessary air and surface testing to identify the specific type of mold and verify that the remediation was successful, giving you peace of mind that the environment is safe again.
