How to permanently treat and prevent wardrobe mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed small black spots appearing in the back of the bedroom wardrobes on the exterior wall. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I’m worried it’s getting worse. Besides cleaning it, what’s the best way to treat this and prevent it from coming back for good?

That's classic condensation-related mold growth, very common in Dubai villas, especially during humid periods. The exterior wall is likely cooler than the humid indoor air, causing moisture to condense inside the wardrobe and create the perfect environment for mold.
Start by cleaning the visible mold with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner. Wear a mask and gloves. This only addresses the surface issue, not the root cause. Permanent prevention requires controlling humidity and temperature differentials. First, improve air circulation inside the wardrobe. Leave the doors slightly ajar for a few hours each day and consider installing louvered doors or ventilation grilles to prevent stagnant, humid air. Second, address the temperature of the exterior wall. Ensure your AC is running consistently to dehumidify the air, even when you're out. Keep bedroom doors open to allow conditioned air to circulate evenly. Using a standalone dehumidifier in the room, especially at night, can also help measurably reduce moisture levels. For a more integrated solution, inspect the villa's exterior wall for cracks or compromised insulation that could be letting in moist air. Sealing these can help. In many cases, the most effective long-term solution is installing a positive pressure ventilation system that pushes dry, filtered air into the wardrobe space, preventing moist air from settling. If the problem persists or covers a large area (more than one square meter), a professional inspection is recommended to identify any hidden moisture sources within the wall cavity itself. They can use thermal imaging to pinpoint cold spots and moisture meters to quantify the problem, providing a targeted remediation plan. |
