How to quickly remove mold from a child's bedroom myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our Mirdif villa has had this damp, earthy smell since the heavy rains a couple of weeks ago, and now I’ve just found a bunch of black and green fuzzy spots growing behind their wardrobe. We keep the AC running but the room always feels a bit humid. What’s the fastest way to deal with this myself before I have to call a professional company?

The fastest way is to address the moisture source first, then clean the mould. Since the smell started after the rains, check the external wall behind the wardrobe for water intrusion, which is common here after heavy downpours.

For cleaning, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Move the wardrobe away from the wall. For a small area of mould on a hard surface, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. Do not mix cleaning products.

However, with fuzzy growth and a persistent damp smell, the visible spots are likely just the tip of the iceberg. The mould may have penetrated the wall or the back of the wardrobe itself. Surface cleaning will not fix this and the mould will return quickly because the root cause is unresolved. In Dubai's climate, the constant AC use can create condensation inside walls if there's a leak, providing a perpetual moisture source.

Given this is a child's bedroom and the problem is recurring, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the hidden moisture source. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact problem point behind the wall, which DIY methods cannot do. Proper remediation often requires controlled removal of affected materials to prevent spreading spores. For health and effectiveness, this is the recommended path for anything beyond a very small, surface-level patch.
